In late 2015, Courtney first presented an in-person film workshop to a small group of eager local photographers. As Courtney started writing the material for the workshop, pieces of her heart started flowing out and she realized that alongside making, teaching the skills AND heart of filming was her passion. Requests for workshops came from all around Australia and in mid-2016, Courtney transcribed her in-person workshop into an online format, which she called ‘Filming Life with Courtney Holmes’. Every workshop that she released sold out, to photographers all over the world.
In mid-2017, she started working on the FilmingLife Academy, a concept that would change the game for photographer/filmmakers in the family genre. To date, the only filmmaking education available for family photographers has been targeted at beginners. There had been no other specialized education on specific topics available for advanced family filmmakers until now.
Courtney’s plan was that the Academy would not only fill this gap, but would also cater to a wide range of skill levels beyond just beginner level students and would become a place for family filmmakers around the world to connect and grow together as artists.
In addition to the online academy memberships, Courtney also added ‘Masterclasses’, designed to challenge intermediate and advanced filmmakers and introduce them to new, specialized concepts that would improve their films as well as their businesses. These would be open to both members and non-members.
As a result of many months of planning and assessing feedback from past workshop students, the FilmingLife Academy was launched in 2018 with the intention of supporting the entire journey of a photographer interested in family filmmaking.
