SHOWCASE: “Unexpected” | FilmingLife® ArtHouse

Unexpected Showcase on Black.png

The FilmingLife® ArtHouse is a series of bi-monthly educator led film projects + showcase opportunities for FilmingLife® Members.

Lead Educators Courtney Holmes, Kylie Purtell& Allison Redmon have chosen 6 themes for the year. Some themes are specific to a technique and others are more broad to give our members the freedom to interpret them as they like.

For each theme, we provide tips, tutorials, and inspiration to encourage and support Members as they work on their film projects.

The January / February ArtHouse Film Project theme was led by Kylie Purtell and was centred around the theme UNEXPECTED. Kylie challenged our members to explore the idea of Unexpected through the use of different cinematography & editing techniques, as well as exploring different narrative styles. Members were encouraged to try new things and to think outside-of-the-box when creating their films.

The theme was broken down into two levels:

Level One: Create a film that includes an element that is completely new to you, something you've never tried before. Shoot from a spot you would have never thought of to shoot from before. Try a new editing technique such as adding light leaks or double exposures. Tell a story you've never told before. Create a film that people have never seen you create.

Level Two: Create a film that includes an element of anticipation, tension, and / or surprise. Build a story that asks a question, and provides an answer.

We’ve been absolutely blown away by the creativity and imaginative storytelling our Members have utilised and showcased in their film project submissions, and it’s our absolute honour to present a Showcase of these wonderful films today.

What Kylie said about Melissa’s film -

”Melissa's 100 Days of Winter film is the absolute epitome of our Unexpected theme. Melissa has pushed herself to really think outside the box in putting this film together and the end result is absolutely amazing. It's fun, playful, her clip placement and timing works in perfect harmony with her chosen soundtrack and I am just utterly blown away by the creativity and attention to detail.”

Alex Lewis

What Kylie said about Alex’s film -

”From the opening scene I was hooked right into the story that Alex was telling. What kept me watching was her creative use of in-camera transitions, and the way she captured and portrayed a real sense of childhood dreaming with her film. It was fantastic to see Alex pushing outside her own boundaries to create a film that is both imaginative and an exercise in creative play, and it made me feel inspired to push harder with my own work.”
