SHOWCASE: “Limitations” Film Projects | FilmingLife® ArtHouse

“The enemy of art is the absence of limitations"

- Orson Welles

Our second theme for the 2022 ArtHouse Film Project was set by FilimingLifer PRO Melissa Hines and centred around LIMITATIONS.

We asked our members to think about a LIMITATION they could impose on their filmmaking, in order to push themselves creatively and think outside the box in order to create films that ultimately utilised or overcame those limitations.

All ArtHouse themes are broken in to 2 levels. For the the LIMITATIONS theme the levels were defined as follows -

For Level One LIMITATIONS films we asked our members to create a film that includes a section or scene that uses a creative LIMITATION of their choice.

Our Level Two LIMITATIONS films were created an entirely within the constraints of the LIMITATION of their choosing..

Melissa led our members through two live learning calls on Zoom, and offered a range of suggestions on the kinds of LIMITATIONS our members might like to create from. Some of the LIMITATIONS chosen by our members were things like using a different lens than they normally would, not using any slow motion, using their phone, or using only ambient audio to tell their story (no music).

The amazing films our members created when using their LIMITATION were beyond excellent, and we’re so excited to present this showcase for you today…

The Educator’s Choice Award has been chosen by the Lead Educator of the film project LIMITATION, FilmingLifer PRO Melissa Hines, as those that fully embody the spirit of the FilmingLife® ArtHouse, and are noted for their storytelling, creativity and unique interpretation of the theme.

Lindsey DeCicco

LIMITATION: iPhone Only

What Melissa said about Lindsey’s film -

The way Lindsey layered her clips and her voiceover in this film left me with tears in my eyes and a smile on my face. I feel like I know her son through this film, but even more important, I feel like I really learn about their relationship. And all of this storytelling magic was created with iPhone clips which goes to show that it's the filmmaker and their voice that is most important, not the camera.

Sarah Muratore

LIMITATION: One continuous shot & triptych EDIT

What Melissa said about Sarah’s film -

Sarah's use of a triptych in this moving portrait film of Milo really made me feel the joy that he has brought to their family! It is a perfect blend of quiet moments and humor that'll draw you in and make you feel like you, too, have spent the year with Milo.

The FilmingLife® ArtHouse is a series of bi-monthly Educator & FilmingLifer member-led film projects + showcase opportunities for FilmingLife® Members.

Lead Educator Kylie Purtell & handpicked FilmingLifers have chosen 6 themes for the year. Some themes are specific to a technique and others are more broad to give our members the freedom to interpret them as they like.

For each theme, we provide tips, tutorials, and inspiration to encourage and support Members as they work on their film projects.
